Darkness of Night

Devotion by: Rev. Billy R. Johnson
Walk as children of light---for the fruit of the light is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.
---Ephesians 5:8b-9 (NKJV)

Read Matthew 5:14-16

There have been many nights during my life when I have been unable to sleep. It would be during these times that I would go out onto my front porch and do some star gazing. I love the peacefulness and stillness of the night.

I remember reading stories of how ships and explorers would use the light from different bright stars to guide their way. There is comfort in light. Sometimes though, there is no moon; or it is overcast and there are no stars, no light. You are totally enveloped in darkness and have no sense of direction. You toss around to and fro, not knowing what to do or where to turn. This can be very frightening.

There are many people in our world today who have no guiding light, no sense of direction. They have nothing or no one to show them what is good or what is bad. Jesus tells us that we are the Light of the world and that we are to walk as children of light. The Christian faith is a magnificent light for people of this world. As Christians we are to share our light by living a life that is glorifying to God and as other believers to the same, together we can bring God's light to the world.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us to let the light of our faith shine, so that others may be guided to you. In Jesus' name. Amen.
